A LETTER FROM SUE 

I’ve just celebrated my 70th birthday with my husband, Ron, my best friend, Vegas, family and friends. I’m a mother, a grandmother of 13, a wife and a trusted friend – and I’m also blind. I lost my sight quite suddenly. Before I lost my sight, my days were filled with adventures, but today I want to talk about my Guide Dog, my best friend, Vegas.

Vegas has given me the confidence to live life without limits and make the most of every day. It’s something I never could have imagined when my world first went dark. 

When I discovered I had optic neuritis, my world suddenly shrunk. From having reduced vision in my right eye, I was now also blind in my left. I wasn’t prepared for this at all. Handing in my driver’s licence really confirmed that for me. In that moment, my freedom was gone.

I stopped going out and began to rely on Ron and the rest of my family. I don’t know what I would’ve done without them. My son-in-law encouraged me to reach out to Guide Dogs for help. From that very first phone call, my whole world changed. I faced new possibilities and a path back to a life of independence. 

A little later, Vegas arrived and there was an instant connection. It was like she had chosen me. 

With Vegas by my side, I can do everything independently. I’ve found my freedom again.
