REGAINING INDEPENDENCE WITH GUIDE DOGS.

David has macular dystrophy, a rare condition that causes progressive vision loss. Despite the challenges he has faced throughout his life, he has remained active, playing hockey, working in management, and contributing to his community.

By the age of 50, David’s vision had deteriorated dramatically, and he became legally blind. This made everyday tasks difficult and limited his independence. He contacted Guide Dogs, starting with Orientation and Mobility training and using a long cane.

In 2016, he was matched with his first Guide Dog, Corrie, whose calm, reliable nature transformed his life, giving him freedom, confidence, and independence. After eight years, Corrie retired, and David was introduced to Grant, a young, enthusiastic Guide Dog. With expert support, the transition was seamless.

David’s Guide Dog allow him to meet friends, go shopping, travel independently, and fully participate in society – simple things many take for granted, but life-changing for someone with low vision.

“Having my Guide Dog by my side helps me feel really confident. I could name 100 things I’d find difficult or couldn’t do without Corrie and Grant”, says David.

David’s story shows how Guide Dogs help people with low vision or blindness live life to the full, and what impact our partnerships can have.
